“Enter the Dragon” fails to kick my ass

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2004

Bruce Lee probably wouldn’t care, but You Work For Them’s recently released “Enter the Dragon” DVD arrived at my house yesterday. I ripped open the package, ready to have my ass kicked by the 25 artists who produced the 26 typographically-inspired pieces it contained.

After watching the entire disc, I wasn’t even bruised. I’m sad to report that the DVD was not very impressive. Most of the work I did enjoy I had already seen elsewhere. (One notable exception was Justin Harder’s piece, which I admired for its levity and originality.)

For more depressed reactions or to mumble your own opinion, head over to this Mograph thread.

Nakd gets baroque with Motorola and MTV

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2004

Nakd’s new spots for a Motorola’s new MTV phones are downright baroque. Using every trick in their varied book, Nakd combined their trademark organic transitions and electrified palettes to produce incredibly lush, vibrant compositions, often crowding out the live action in favor of trippy visuals.

I have to admit I wasn’t so sure about this approach at first, but upon a second viewing, I wanted more. Thankfully, Nakd post “day” and “night” spots. This is infectious stuff.

More art, more speed

Big thanks to Firemind over at Mograph for posting this jewel of a link:

On that page, you’ll find all the films completed thus far for Nike’s eagerly anticipated “Art of Speed” DVD. Huzzah!

KDLAB does it again

Friday, June 4th, 2004

As part of Nike’s new “Art of Speed” project, KDLAB created “Les Jumelles,” a breathtaking short film inspired by Einstein’s theory of General Relativity. These guys consistently blow me away. And TRS-80’s fantastic job on the sound design really sells the piece.

Watch it here (and make sure to check out the “iSpec” piece as well).

Stardust’s “Step Into Blue”

Thursday, June 3rd, 2004

Stardust’s “Step Into Blue,” commissioned by Bombay Sapphire and featured on Newstoday, is a beautiful trip through an ever-shifting landscape of Dada-esque collages. I particularly like the use of wandering, dismembered, deconstructed models.

Check it out here.

I’m really glad to see Bombay Sapphire supporting this kind of experimental work. Swing by the Bombay Sapphire Cinema for more inspired—and inspiring—work (including Psyop’s much-celebrated “Drift”).
