The Gorman report part deux

Monday, October 10th, 2005

Hello Tweensters, I’m happy to be making my first post here on Tween as a new contributor. Thanks for inviting me aboard Justin! (By the way, any Australian motion studios that want to send me goodies or cash, please feel free to do so).

Characters in motion.
If you happen to be in Berlin over the 25th-26th of November you might want to pop in to the Pictoplasma Animation Festival, a two day festival celebrating contemporary character animation. Shynola and Fons Schiedon are confirmed attendees.

New Psyop goodness… I think.
I might be mistaken, but the irrepressible Psyop appear to have some new work up for Absolut Level and McDonalds – the latter showing off a beautiful cut-out-paint-on-paper 3D vibe.

Mograph needs help!
Lastly, mograph is badly in need of donations to keep their server up and banner-ad free. If you’ve ever got anything of value from mograph stop by and donate a couple of bucks.

Brand New World

Monday, July 11th, 2005

Until recently, I’d never heard of Brand New World, a firm that "develops creative solutions for emerging and advanced media" (to quote Mark Risis, their executive producer).

A quick tour of their site will reveal that they are definitely different. For one thing, they come to the table with a boatload of experience. Their chief executives aren’t 20-something hotshots (not that there’s anything wrong with that); they’re seasoned veterans with a sophisticated approach to brand management and creative development.

I can already hear some of you moaning about how they don’t have a balls-to-the-wall reel and wondering why there aren’t any silhouetted naked chicks on their site. But like I said, these guys are sophisticated. They’re not interested in dipping your eyeballs in electric kool aid; they care about building brands and relationships with customers.

(This isn’t PR-speak, by the way. I’m simply responding based on their site and their work and trying to get you, gentle reader, to look at a firm that’s a little outside the Tween mainstream.)

With that in mind, check out this series of three IDs for the Discovery Home and Health channel. You can tell an awful lot of attention was paid to market research for these spots. Each has a laser-like focus that speaks clearly and freshly to the channel’s audience. From the sound design to the palettes to the varied animation styles, everything lines up to form a cohesive, effective whole with little conceptual or aesthetic fat.

(Speaking of sound design, I love the music on Brand New World’s site. Rarely do I let site music play for ten minutes without reaching for the mute button.)

Leroy & Clarkson: New site, new reel.

Saturday, July 9th, 2005

Leroy & Clarkson
Cream O’ the Crop members Leroy & Clarkson updated their site recently with new work and a new reel. While I prefer the sense of humor from the previous reel (mostly the dog) the new reel displays some great new work. Maybe I prefer the way the previous edit synched with the track early in the reel drawing me much closer to the work much faster, or maybe I just miss the pooch.

I’m about 99% sure that is a view from their roof on Lafayette street, down in Chinatown.

Finally, Thanks to Jedi Master Justin for making me a Tween author. Wish me luck.

Another outstanding work from Buraco de Bala

Tuesday, April 5th, 2005

Hey, maybe I am the slower news editor here… the other guys are already talented enough to catch all the good work flying over the web :-) But sometimes I do manage to find something interesting, and again, this time, just around the corner.

The guys from Buraco de Bala is here to prove that not only names like Nando Costa and Lobo are the top of motion design in Brazil. For this job, they have done something really nice and classic for the new MTV show called Beija Sapo MTV (Kiss the Frog). I hope i can catch up with this guys for a beer anytime here in Brasilia…

Take a look here.

Welcome to the Cream o´the Crop list guys!

boujou 3.0 Demo Available
Download the recently released boujou 3.0 demo. I don’t have a lot of experience with motion tracking software, but boujou is the bomb. Give it a whirl.

Mike Schaeffer: Free Association
I dug this piece from newcomer Mike Schaeffer, another inbox acquaintance. It’s weird as hell, especially with the whacked-out soundtrack, and I like that very much. It feels a little like a compressed dream sequence. The camera moves keep me off balance, and the persistent deep blue background gives the whole thing a slightly creepy air. Good work on the 2D elements, as well.

iCorn (no relation)
Seeing as how my last name is Cone, I was understandably charmed by the lively traffic cone in iCorn. The more I watched, though, the weirder it got. By the end, I just felt violated, used.

Lo Iacono & Diesel
Check out this collaborative piece from Lo Iacono and Diesel. Wild stuff.

(Ripped from Mograph.)

Umeric: New Reel

Friday, February 4th, 2005

Long-time Cream O’ the Crop residents Umeric have a new reel online. There’s some pretty kick-ass stuff in there.

Another Massive Post

The Home-brewed iPod Ad
You’ve probably heard about it by now, but here’s the decidedly righteous home-brewed iPod ad created by designer and Apple enthusiast George Masters.

Wired posted an interesting article discussing possible implications of this ad. (Thanks to my buddy Ross for the tip on this one.)

Other organizations who’ve recently benefited from grassroots video ads are Converse (via Converse Gallery) and Creative Commons. Thanks to increasingly accessible and affordable technology, this trend will undoubtedly continue to grow in popularity.

The Awakening of Consciousness
This upcoming film looks promising. Make sure to check out the 2D and 3D sections for great concept art. According to the News section, the project is nearly complete, so check back soon.

The Work of Jaron Albertin
Thanks to a thread on Mograph, I recently discovered director/artist Jaron Albertin. You can find some choice selections of his work Soft Citizen site.

Make sure to check out the promo for Circlesquare. So simple, so haunting, so… well, cool.

Poules Quiès
Check out this wonderful animated short done entirely in Combustion. For more details from the craetor, see this CGTalk thread.

Over Time
From Partizan Lab comes “Over Time,” a beautiful animated short about a recently-deceased puppeteer and his very lively puppets. Open this page and click on “Over Time” to watch the film.

Edit: Partizan yanked it from their site. Try this page instead, courtesy of ‘boards magazine.
